A love letter to the Grand Lake Theater ❤️❤️

Oakland has so many unique and fantastic things and The Grand Lake Theater is one of those things!

Oakland's Grand Lake Theatre has recently been honored by Variety as one of the "21 Coolest Movie Theaters in the World," a recognition that underscores its rich history and unique charm.

If you haven't been you should!! A historic theater built in 1926 Its architecture boasts vintage Egyptian and Moorish designs, transporting visitors to a bygone era. Beyond its aesthetic allure, the theater is a pioneer in sustainability, with rooftop solar panels supplying most of its power. Technologically, it offers some of the finest 3D and 70mm projection experiences in the Bay Area.San Francisco Chronicle

Unlike modern theaters, there are not the pre-film commercials, so watching the movie is the focus. On Friday and Saturday nights, patrons are treated to live performances on the theater's Mighty Wurlitzer organ. Seriously it is something you have to see! Additionally, the theater offers discounted tickets on Tuesdays ($6!!), making it accessible to a broader audience

Plus, the theater isn’t afraid to speak its mind. Its marquee often features bold political messages, turning heads and starting conversations—because the Grand Lake isn’t just about films; it’s about community and culture.

Owner Allen Michaan said it best: the Grand Lake isn’t just a place to see a movie. It’s an experience. Whether you're a local or just passing through Oakland, catching a flick there should absolutely be on your to-do list.

If you live locally support this amazing place and if you are visiting, it is not to miss experience!
